Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the ambitious Jaipur Metro Phase-2 project on July 4, 2026, marking a major milestone in the city’s urban transport journey. He unveiled the foundation virtually during the inauguration ceremony of the Rajasthan Refinery at Pachpadra in Balotra district, as part of a series of development projects worth over ₹1.06 lakh crore launched across Rajasthan and Gujarat on the same day.
The Jaipur Metro Phase-2 is envisioned as a 41-kilometre North-South corridor that will run from Prahladpura to Todi Mod. The corridor will feature a total of 36 stations, of which 34 will be elevated and 2 will be underground. With an estimated cost of ₹13,037.66 crore, the project is one of the largest infrastructure investments in the history of Jaipur and is expected to transform the way residents commute across the Pink City.
One of the biggest advantages of the new corridor is the seamless connectivity it will offer to several key destinations. The route will link the Sitapura Industrial Area, Vishwakarma Industrial Area (VKIA), Jaipur International Airport, Tonk Road, Sawai Man Singh Hospital, Sawai Man Singh Stadium, the Collectorate, Jaipur Railway Station, Ambabari and Vidyadhar Nagar. This wide coverage is expected to benefit lakhs of daily commuters, including office-goers, students, patients, traders and industrial workers.
The project will be implemented by the Rajasthan Metro Rail Corporation Limited (RMRCL), a 50:50 joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of Rajasthan. Officials have set September 2031 as the targeted year of completion for the entire corridor. The phased construction approach is aimed at minimising disruption to existing traffic while ensuring that quality and safety standards are maintained throughout.
Work on the ground is already gaining momentum. Under the first package of Phase-2, RMRCL has issued a Letter of Acceptance (LoA) for works worth more than ₹918.04 crore. This package covers the design and construction of a 12-kilometre elevated corridor running from Prahladpura to Pinjrapol Gaushala, which will include an elevated viaduct and 10 elevated stations. Once completed, this stretch will serve as the backbone for the wider network.
Experts believe that the expansion of the metro network will help reduce road congestion, cut down travel time and lower vehicular pollution in Jaipur, which has been grappling with rising traffic volumes in recent years. A modern, reliable and affordable public transport system is also expected to encourage more residents to shift away from private vehicles.
Beyond convenience, the project is likely to give a significant boost to the local economy. The construction phase alone is expected to generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs, while improved connectivity to industrial areas and the airport could attract fresh investment to the region. Real estate and commercial activity along the corridor are also expected to pick up pace in the coming years.
Political leaders and citizens alike have welcomed the foundation stone ceremony, describing it as a long-awaited step towards making Jaipur a truly world-class city. As the project moves from planning to execution, all eyes will now be on timely implementation and the quality of work delivered on the ground.
